Building
A Low-Cost Maternity Wardrobe
Q.
I wear a size 26. What size maternity clothes will I need?
A.
You may not need maternity clothes at all. The larger your pre-pregnancy
size, the less weight you will probably gain during your pregnancy.
Look for loose-fitting, non-maternity clothes in a size or two
larger than your pre-pregnancy size. Good styles to consider are
baby doll and trapeze tops and drawstring knit bottoms. If you
decide you need a few maternity pieces during your last month
or so, look for the same size maternity clothes as your pre-pregnancy
size.
Q.
So many of the low and moderately-priced maternity clothes I see
are either dowdy or too cutesy with lots of ruffles. How can I
dress a little more trendy without spending a fortune?
A.
If you wear a pre-pregnancy size 14-22 you may not need maternity
clothes until month 8. Build an inexpensive "maternity"
wardrobe in the earlier months with loose-fitting non-maternity
clothes. Look for trapeze or baby-doll style tops and drawstring
bottoms that are 1-2 sizes larger than your pre-pregnancy size.
Use trendy accessories and shoes to enhance your look.
Q.
I work in a very conservative office. How can I build a great
work wardrobe that won't cost me a fortune?
A.
Select a few separates (e.g., slacks, skirt, blazer) in a basic
color (e.g., brown, black, camel etc.) that can create "suited"
looks when worn together and "business casual" looks when worn
separately with solid tops in your favorite colors. Use accessories
and shoes to create new looks from basic pieces. Tip: Shop
the sales for non-maternity separates in a size 1-2 sizes larger
than your pre-pregnancy size. This way you can really get a lot
of fashion for a lot less money.
